What to Bring to a Utah CDL Test in 2026

Utah is strict about document quality. DLD says required identity documents must be original or certified copies; ordinary photocopies and faxed copies are not accepted. For CDL applicants, document preparation matters because a licensing appointment can fail before you ever reach the knowledge test.
For your original CDL and knowledge-test appointment
- Your current driver license; Utah requires one year of Class D driving experience for an original CDL.
- Proof of identity and date of birth using an accepted original or certified document.
- Proof of your full Social Security number using an accepted document.
- Utah address documents when required; DLD's U.S.-citizen list uses two address proofs, generally dated within 90 days.
- Legal name-change documents when the names on your records do not match.
- Confirmation that your Medical Examiner Certificate has been submitted electronically and added to the DLD record.
- Payment for the $52 CDL written-test transaction plus any endorsements.
For the CDL skills test
- Your valid commercial learner permit, held at least 14 days.
- Proof that applicable ELDT has been completed.
- A registered, road-ready commercial vehicle appropriate for the class and restrictions you want if testing at DLD.
- Current registration and insurance documentation for the vehicle.
- Your appointment confirmation or the instructions supplied by the third-party tester.
Choose the vehicle deliberately
Utah skills testing can create restrictions. If you want full air-brake privileges, manual-transmission privileges, or an unrestricted tractor-trailer Class A, practice and test in equipment that demonstrates those privileges. Do not discover after passing that the school's truck caused an E, L, Z, or O restriction you did not expect.
Originals versus copies
Utah DLD says required documents must be original or certified with an issuing-agency seal, stamp, or signature and must be unexpired. Photocopies, faxed copies, laminated birth certificates, and hospital certificates are not accepted as substitutes.
