Texas has separate preparation needs for the CLP knowledge-test appointment and the CDL skills test. The knowledge-test appointment is document-heavy; the skills test adds a representative commercial vehicle and vehicle paperwork.
For the CLP and Knowledge Tests
- Your valid Texas driver license.
- Completed CDL application or the information needed to complete it at the office.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or applicable lawful presence.
- Identity documentation.
- Social Security number, which Texas verifies electronically.
- Medical self-certification form and a valid medical status when your category requires it.
- Current Texas vehicle registration and insurance documentation when the DPS instructions require it for your situation.
- Payment for the CLP application fee.
Texas also completes thumbprints, photograph, and vision screening as part of the office transaction.
Prepare for the Required Test Order
Texas DPS requires the commercial knowledge tests in this order: Texas Commercial Rules, General Knowledge, Combination for Class A, Air Brakes if applicable, then endorsements. Since June 1, 2026, all Texas CDL/CLP knowledge examinations are administered in English only and interpreters are prohibited.
For the CDL Skills Test
- A valid Texas driver license and appropriate CLP.
- At least 14 days elapsed from CLP issuance on the normal first-time path.
- Applicable ELDT completed and available electronically.
- A representative commercial motor vehicle for the class and endorsements being tested.
- Current registration and insurance or other proof of financial responsibility required for the vehicle.
- Your appointment information and any site-specific instructions.
The Skills Test
Texas tests vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. The CMV you provide must represent the type of CLP you hold. Vehicle configuration can affect restrictions, so confirm the transmission, brake system, and class before test day.
Before You Leave Home
Check the appointment location again on the day of testing, confirm that the vehicle is available and legally operable, and make sure the registration and insurance documents match the vehicle you are bringing. If a school or employer supplies the truck, ask who is responsible for getting it to the test site and what happens if the vehicle is rejected during the pre-test inspection.
