What to Bring to Your Tennessee CDL Test 2026: Full Checklist

Tennessee is strict about CDL documentation. The state says application documents must be originals and that photocopies are not accepted. Also, the medical-certification process changed in 2025, so an older checklist telling you to rely on a paper DOT card can now be misleading.
For the CDL application or permit stage
- Proof of Social Security number.
- Your Tennessee driver license or ID, or a valid driver license/CDL from another state when applicable.
- Two proofs of Tennessee residence that meet current Driver Services requirements.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status. Tennessee says it does not issue non-domicile CDLs.
- Current self-certification and required medical status. Use the latest Tennessee medical guidance because National Registry II changed how the medical result reaches the state.
A key 2025 medical-document change
Tennessee says that after National Registry II implementation on June 15, 2025, medical-examination information for covered drivers is transmitted electronically from the examiner through FMCSA to Tennessee. The state says the physical MCSA-5876 is no longer accepted as proof of a valid medical examination. Bring the identity and licensing documents Driver Services requires, but verify the electronic medical record instead of assuming a paper card solves a missing transmission.
For the skills test
- Your valid Tennessee Commercial Learner's Permit for the correct class and endorsements.
- Applicable ELDT completion in FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before the test is administered.
- A representative commercial vehicle for the class of CDL you want, properly registered and safe to test in.
- Any appointment confirmation, payment, and tester-specific documentation required by the state center or certified third-party organization.
- Any additional documents required for passenger, school-bus, or hazardous-materials endorsements.
Do not use an old checklist for immigration status
Current Tennessee CDL guidance requires proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status and states that Tennessee does not issue non-domicile CDLs. Beginning January 1, 2026, credentials issued to qualifying lawful permanent residents are issued as Temporary CDLs. Verify unusual status situations directly with Driver Services before paying for training or testing.
