What to Bring to a North Carolina CDL Test in 2026

North Carolina has two very different checklists: one for the office visit where you obtain the commercial learner permit, and one for the CDL road skills test. Mixing them together is how applicants arrive with a truck but without the permit, or arrive for the CLP without the identity and residency documents NCDMV requires.

For the CLP and knowledge-test visit

• Your valid North Carolina driver license
• One document proving age and identity
• A Social Security card or another accepted document proving your Social Security number
• For U.S. citizens, two documents proving North Carolina residency
• For non-U.S. citizens, an accepted U.S. government document proving lawful presence
• Proof of liability insurance from a provider licensed to do business in North Carolina
• Any name-change documentation needed to connect the name on your identity documents and current license

Medical certification

If your commercial driving category requires an MEC, the medical examiner should submit it electronically. Since June 28, 2025, NCDMV no longer accepts the paper MEC from the commercial driver as the official submission. Confirm the electronic record before relying on it at the licensing counter.

For the CDL road skills test

• Your valid driver license
• Your unexpired commercial learner permit, held for at least 14 days
• A commercial vehicle representative of the class and configuration for which you are testing
• A vehicle that is legally registered, insured, safe, and ready for inspection
• Any appointment information NCDMV gave you when you scheduled by phone

Your vehicle determines restrictions

The vehicle you use matters beyond simply passing. Testing in a vehicle without full air brakes, with an automatic transmission, or in a combination that is not a tractor-semitrailer can result in restrictions on the CDL. Match the test vehicle to the work you actually intend to do.

Call before test day if anything is unclear

CDL road tests are scheduled through NCDMV Customer Service at 919-715-7000 rather than the ordinary online road-test scheduler. Confirm the location, time, and vehicle expectations when you book instead of assuming every driver license office handles commercial road tests the same way.
