What to Bring to New York CDL Test 2026: Checklist

New York has two very different CDL test-day situations: the commercial permit/knowledge-test transaction at a DMV office and the commercial road test. Preparing for the correct appointment prevents the most common document and vehicle problems.

For the CDL Permit and Knowledge Tests

• Your existing New York State Class D, Class E, or Non-CDL Class C driver license.
• A completed permit/license application as required by DMV.
• Proof of legal presence when the transaction requires it.
• Any identity/residency documentation identified by the DMV pre-screening process for your record.
• Information about every U.S. state or the District of Columbia where you held a driver license during the previous 10 years, if applicable.

• Your valid New York Commercial Learner Permit.

Vehicle configuration can affect the license you receive. A first commercial road test in an automatic-transmission CMV can create an E restriction. Testing in a vehicle without air brakes can create an L restriction, while air-over-hydraulic equipment can create a Z restriction. Choose the vehicle intentionally.
