What to Bring to Your Michigan CDL Test 2026: Checklist
Michigan CDL test checklist for 2026: permit-stage documents, skills-test items, medical status, ELDT verification, and vehicle planning.
Michigan uses different locations for the permit/knowledge stage and the driving-skills stage, so there is no single one-size-fits-all checklist. Prepare for the Secretary of State transaction first, then confirm the exact requirements of the approved Driver Testing Business you booked.
For your CDL application and knowledge testing
- Your current valid Michigan driver license.
- Proof of legal presence in the United States as required by the Secretary of State.
- Proof of your Social Security number.
- Any hazardous-materials security documentation required for an H endorsement application.
- A medical status that is valid for your self-certification category. For non-excepted interstate drivers, Michigan receives the MEC electronically from FMCSA's National Registry.
Before the skills-test appointment
- A valid, unexpired Michigan Commercial Learner's Permit for the class and endorsements you are testing for.
- Applicable ELDT completion reported by a registered provider to FMCSA before the test is administered.
- A commercial vehicle representative of the class you want and equipped in a way that will not create an unwanted restriction.
- Any tester-specific documents, payment method, and appointment confirmation required by the Driver Testing Business. Confirm these directly when booking because private testers set their own fees and policies.
Vehicle choice can change the CDL you receive
The vehicle used for the skills test matters. Testing in a vehicle without air brakes can produce an air-brake restriction; testing in certain automatic-transmission configurations can also affect restrictions. Do not rent or borrow a vehicle until you have confirmed that it represents the CDL class and operating privileges you want.
Medical card: verify the electronic record
Do not rely on carrying a paper Medical Examiner's Certificate as proof for Michigan's non-excepted interstate process. Since June 2025 the state receives the qualifying result electronically. Check the Secretary of State online record before test day, especially if the physical was completed recently.
