Texas uses more than one testing pathway, so a CDL applicant should not assume that the office used for the CLP transaction will also be the final skills-test site. Knowledge testing is handled through DPS driver license services, while skills testing can be completed through designated DPS sites or certain authorized alternatives.
Knowledge Tests
Commercial knowledge exams are administered through Texas DPS driver license offices as part of the CLP application process. All CDL and CLP knowledge exams are English-only as of June 1, 2026. Make an appointment and verify that your selected office can complete the commercial transaction.
DPS Skills Testing Locations
Texas maintains designated CDL skills-testing locations. These locations administer the vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and road portions of the CDL exam. Use the current DPS scheduling and CDL location resources because locations and operating details can change.
DPS Mobile Testing Teams
Texas DPS also operates mobile CDL testing teams that serve certain customers outside the practical radius of fixed testing sites. DPS identifies organizations such as community colleges, school districts, education centers, fire departments, and other government organizations as key users. This is not simply a walk-up mobile service for any individual applicant.
Authorized Third-Party Skills Testing
Texas authorizes qualified organizations under the CDL Third Party Skills Testing program. Students or employees of participating providers may be able to test through the authorized provider. A school advertising on-site CDL testing should be able to show current DPS authorization.
Skills-Test Modernization
Texas has implemented modernized vehicle-inspection and basic-control protocols at most CDL testing locations. DPS currently notes exceptions at Del Rio and Wichita Falls. Review the current testing materials for the specific site before the appointment.
