North Carolina CDL Test Locations 2026: Knowledge and Road Tests
Where to take North Carolina CDL tests in 2026: driver license offices for permit testing, phone-only CDL road-test scheduling, and how school-based testing can differ.
North Carolina does not use one universal list where every driver license office performs every CDL service. Knowledge testing is handled through NCDMV driver license offices, while CDL road-test appointments must be scheduled through NCDMV Customer Service. Some training programs advertise authorized on-site testing, so the correct location depends on how you trained and which test you are taking.
Knowledge tests and the CLP
Use an NCDMV driver license office for the CLP process. NCDMV says CDL applicants take the required vision, traffic-sign recognition, and CDL knowledge tests at a driver license office. The regular appointment system includes a Commercial Driver License selection, and offices also accept walk-ins subject to capacity.
CDL road tests are scheduled by phone
NCDMV explicitly states that CDL road-test appointments cannot be made online. Call 919-715-7000. The representative can confirm the testing location and appointment. Do not drive a commercial test vehicle to the nearest office assuming an examiner will be available.
School-based testing exists, but it is program-specific
At least some North Carolina training programs advertise an authorized on-site Class A skills test. Johnston Community College is a current example. Treat that as a feature of that program, not a blanket rule that every school or community college can test you.
Bring your own representative vehicle unless your program provides it
For an NCDMV road test, the state requires the applicant to provide the commercial motor vehicle. The vehicle must represent the class of CDL being sought. If a school says its tuition includes testing, ask whether that also includes the truck and what happens if a retest is needed.
How to choose the best location
- For the CLP: choose a convenient driver license office and verify current hours and appointment availability.
- For the road test: call NCDMV first and use the location assigned or confirmed for CDL testing.
- If your school offers authorized testing: compare wait time, vehicle availability, retest cost, and whether results are submitted directly to NCDMV.
