New York does not use one location for every CDL step. Commercial knowledge tests are taken at DMV offices, while CDL road tests are scheduled through the state's road-test system at designated road-test sites. The final license amendment is then completed at a DMV office after you pass.
Knowledge Tests: DMV Offices
New York's current CDL page states that commercial permit tests are only offered at DMV offices. The $10 application fee covers the commercial knowledge and endorsement tests taken at the same time; additional required tests taken later can carry another fee.
Use the DMV office/reservation information before traveling. State and county-run offices can differ in scheduling and service availability, so confirm that the location will handle the CDL permit transaction you need.
Road Tests: DMV Scheduling System
CDL Class A, B, and C road tests are scheduled through New York's Road Test Scheduling System. The state provides site/direction information through the scheduler. Before scheduling, you must pay the $40 CDL road-test fee.
The 14-Day Rule
The road-test date cannot fall within 14 days of when your commercial learner permit was issued. The scheduling system is therefore not simply a matter of finding the earliest open appointment; the date must also satisfy the CLP holding period.
ELDT Timing
When federal ELDT applies, New York allows an applicant to schedule the road test before finishing the training, but DMV requires the completed training to be on file seven days before the appointment. If it is not, the appointment can be canceled.
Vehicle and Site Planning
Bring a representative vehicle appropriate for the class and endorsements you seek. Testing in an automatic transmission or in equipment without full air brakes can create license restrictions. If a school provides the test vehicle, confirm the configuration before scheduling.
After You Pass
Your test result is posted after 6 p.m. on the day of the road test. After a pass, you return to a DMV office to amend the license. The office issues a temporary CDL, and the photo credential is mailed later.
