Illinois CDL Test Locations 2026: Knowledge and Skills Testing
Where to take Illinois CDL knowledge and skills tests in 2026, how scheduling works, and why third-party employee testing is different from public testing.
Illinois does not treat every Driver Services facility as interchangeable for the full CDL process. Knowledge services are broadly available through Secretary of State facilities, while CDL skills and road testing is appointment-based at designated locations.
Knowledge-test locations
Use the Illinois Secretary of State facility finder to confirm that a location offers the CDL service you need. The current General/Core knowledge exam is computerized, and additional classification, air-brake, and endorsement tests are added based on the credential you are seeking.
Skills and road-test locations
Illinois publishes a specific list of CDL skills/drive testing locations and requires an appointment. Current materials list designated sites such as Bradley, Charleston, DeKalb, Elk Grove Village, Effingham, Mascoutah/Lebanon, Marion, Moline/Silvis, Olney, Peoria, Princeton, Quincy, Rockford, Springfield, South Holland, Salem, Tilton, West Chicago and others; location capabilities can differ, so use the live Secretary of State list rather than relying on an old blog.
Scheduling
You may schedule after receiving the CLP for a future date beyond the 14-day waiting period. Illinois provides online scheduling and a telephone scheduling channel. Appointment availability and testing days vary by location.
Third-party certification is not the ordinary public testing network
Illinois also licenses certain companies, municipalities, fire departments, and government agencies to conduct CDL testing for employees who need a CDL for daily operations. That program should not be described as a general alternative testing marketplace for any applicant.
Before choosing a site
- Confirm the site can test the CDL class and vehicle type you need.
- Confirm whether your written tests are complete.
- Check your CLP waiting-period date.
- Confirm the vehicle, registration, insurance, weight-rating labels, and safety documentation.
- Use the current state scheduling page because sites and appointment availability can change.
