How to Get a CDL in Michigan 2026: Step-by-Step

Michigan separates the CDL process into two systems: Secretary of State offices handle the permit, knowledge testing, and license transaction, while approved public and private Driver Testing Businesses administer the CDL skills test. Knowing that split prevents a common mistake — going back to an SOS office expecting to take the road test there.

Step-by-step Michigan CDL process

1. Start with a valid Michigan driver license and gather the documents the Secretary of State requires for a CDL application, including proof of legal presence and your Social Security number.
2. Determine whether your commercial driving category requires medical certification and make sure your medical status is current. For non-excepted interstate drivers, Michigan now receives the Medical Examiner's Certificate electronically from FMCSA's National Registry rather than from the driver on paper.
3. At a Secretary of State office, complete the required vision screening and CDL knowledge tests for the class, brake system, and endorsements you need. Michigan requires at least 80% on each CDL knowledge test.
4. Receive your Commercial Learner's Permit. Federal rules require you to hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test.
