How to Get a CDL in Georgia 2026: Step-by-Step Guide

Getting a Georgia CDL is not one single test. It is a sequence: establish eligibility, complete the Georgia DDS application process, pass the required knowledge exams, receive a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), complete any required Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT), then pass the skills test in the correct class of vehicle. The order matters, especially because federal ELDT rules do not require you to finish theory training before getting a CLP.

1. Confirm that you are eligible

• You must hold a valid Georgia driver's license and meet Georgia DDS identification and residency requirements.
• You can obtain a Georgia CDL at age 18, but drivers under 21 are restricted to intrastate commercial driving until they reach 21.
• Before operating in a non-excepted category, you must meet the applicable federal medical qualification rules and keep your medical status current with DDS.

2. Complete the DDS online License/ID/Permit form

Georgia DDS requires the online License/ID/Permit form before you visit a Customer Service Center. DDS says the completed form remains on file for 60 days. Do this close enough to your visit that it will still be active when you arrive.

3. Handle medical certification and self-certification

If your driving category requires a DOT medical certificate, use an examiner listed on FMCSA's National Registry. Since June 18, 2025, medical examiners transmit CDL medical certificate results electronically through FMCSA to Georgia DDS; DDS no longer accepts the base medical certificate from drivers by mail, fax, email, online upload, or in person. Keep your own copy for your records and verify that your DDS medical status is current.

4. Apply and pass the required knowledge exams

Georgia uses a $35 Commercial Application Permit (CAP) fee. DDS says that CAP covers up to four knowledge-test attempts and is valid until the fourth failed attempt or until 360 days pass between attempts, whichever applies first. There is also a $10 permit/testing fee paid before the knowledge exams. If you fail an exam, DDS retains that $10 as a testing fee and another $10 is due for the next attempt.

Every applicant needs the knowledge tests that match the license class, vehicle equipment, and endorsements being pursued. DDS publishes an 80% passing score for CDL knowledge tests. Study from the current Georgia Commercial Driver's Manual rather than relying on a generic question-count promise from a third-party site.

5. Receive your CLP and hold it for at least 14 days

A Georgia CLP issued under the current rules is valid for 365 days. Federal and Georgia rules require you to hold the CLP for at least 14 days before taking the CDL skills test. That 14-day period is a legal minimum, not a guarantee that you will be ready to test on day 15.

6. Complete ELDT when it applies to you

ELDT applies to first-time Class A and Class B applicants, drivers upgrading from Class B to Class A, and first-time applicants for the passenger, school bus, or hazardous materials endorsements. Federal rules allow you to obtain the CLP before completing ELDT. The required behind-the-wheel training must be completed and recorded by an FMCSA-registered provider before the state-administered skills test; hazardous-materials theory training must be completed before the hazmat knowledge test.

7. Schedule and take the Georgia CDL skills test

Georgia has completed its statewide transition to the Modernized Commercial Driver Testing model. CDL road-test appointments are required. DDS directs applicants to its online appointment system after completing the required online form. You must bring a vehicle that matches the class and restrictions you are testing for, and the vehicle must pass the pre-test safety inspection.

• Arrive at least 20 minutes early.
• Bring paper vehicle registration and valid insurance.
• If the vehicle has temporary tags or was purchased within the previous 30 days, bring the bill of sale when required by DDS.
• Bring the current paper CDL Vehicle Inspection Checklist used for the Modernized test.
• The skills-test fee is $50 for each attempt.
• DDS requires at least 72 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule without forfeiting the appointment fee.

8. Pay the license fee after you pass

The current Georgia CDL license fee is $32 for an eight-year license. A clean first-attempt path using the standard CAP, permit, one DDS skills test, and CDL issuance is $127 in state fees before endorsements, medical-exam costs, training, or vehicle rental. Failed attempts can add testing fees.

Military applicants: do not assume every test is waived

Georgia offers a military skills-test waiver for eligible current or recently discharged service members who meet the commercial-driving experience requirements.
