CDL Cost in Illinois 2026: Current State Fees and Real Budget

The cleanest way to budget for an Illinois CDL is to separate published Secretary of State fees from costs the state does not set, such as training tuition, the DOT physical, transportation to testing, and vehicle access. A single “total CDL cost” number is usually misleading.

Current Illinois Secretary of State fees

• Illinois non-CDL holder adding an original CLP: $50.
• Existing Illinois CDL holder upgrading classification or adding an endorsement and obtaining an original CLP: $5.

Do not confuse school tuition with licensing fees

A training school may quote a package price that includes vehicle use, instruction, or other services, but the Illinois credential fees remain state transactions. Ask the school to itemize exactly what its price covers and what you will still pay separately.

• Confirm whether a test vehicle is included.
